The Power Of Agreements
We all know as business owners and people for that matter, that agreements provide a safety net and in many cases are binding (eg property leases.)
Marriage is another example where couples enter into an agreement.
Business partners have contracts and agreements in place to protect each other and for peace of mind.
Employers provide employment contracts for staff. The list goes on an on.
When it comes to being accountable to ourselves for what we say we are going to do there is generally no agreement for this.
If you say you are going to go to the gym 4 times this week, do you sign an agreement with yourself?
If you say you are going to have that blog post completed by the end of the week, most likely you don't sign an agreement either.
Accountability to ourselves is an easy area to reneg on because there is no-one holding us to account, except for ourselves. And if you are someone that is used to letting yourself down in certain areas, it really is not a big deal in the short term.
Each day goes by and there is usually a great reason how come we did not do something that will progress us in some important area of our lives.
When you set a goal and you don't follow through, how do you feel?
How do you want to feel?
In light of this perhaps creating and signing an agreement with yourself is not as silly as it sounds.
Take it one step further and publicly declare your intentions, and then don't follow through.
But the public declaration is only powerful if someone follows you up.
Most public declarations fade into oblivion like fire works.
So the best approach is to ask someone to deliberately follow you up. Ask to be held accountable.
There is an art to holding someone accountable. It is a skill-set and it can be learned.
As business owners it is a great investment becoming more present to accountability as a skill-set and as a gateway to freedom and success.
